Recent interactive projects by Universal Everything

Over the past few years there have many new examples of how audiences can interact with websites and interactive installations through the use of sound and motion. These use a combination of motion sensors, webcams, cameras and microphones to create interesting interactions with an audience and it’s surroundings. The design studio Universal Everything has created several different videos and digital installations for clients including Nokia, the V&A Museum, MTV, AOL and Esquire Magazine.

In a recent project for Esquire magazine they created a series of 3D logos that reacted to the sound of voice recordings of various American accents. The peaks and troughs of the logo are made up of the variations in the voice and accent. The sound of each person voice is what determines the final shape of the logo and means there is an unlimited number of variations of it.

Another project they worked on for AOL saw them create a series of idents for the brand where the visuals were made up of a series of patterns that reacted to the movement of several dancers.

An interactive installation for the V&A museum saw Universal Everything create a sound-reactive sculpture that reacts to music that is played to it. The visuals were projected onto a 4 meter high video wall in the courtyard of the V&A and created a series of unique videos and postcards that were used to promote the event. Matt Pyke, the studio founder and a former designer from The Designer’s Republic describes the project in the following way:

“The ornate courtyard setting opened many possibilities. From screens hidden around the garden, to laser-projection onto the building before arriving upon using the central lake as the stage – an untouchable audio-video artwork floating above the lake, reflecting into the water. The installation had 100,000+ visitors throughout its 3 month stay, the video podcast spread worldwide reaching #2 in the iTunes Arts podcast chart. It has since been exhibited as 6 simultaneous window projections and 800 wall mounted postcards in the SIAD Gallery, Sheffield.”

Pyke crosses from print projects to digital seamlessly and creates work for clients that combines a mix of interactive, sound and visuals in an impressive way.
